9 Plants I Would Like To Try To Raise

Hello Everyone!

Plants

I know I don’t have a lot of room in my home for a lot of plants, but I can’t help wanting to buy more. I would like to learn how to grow and harvest my own fruits and veggies, or prune away old stems to help my current plants grow bushier, or even learn how to irrigate and encourage them to grow more bountiful. There are lots of things I want to try to do, and one of them is to learn how to plant and grow a variety of them. So, here are 9 plants that I would like to try to raise, if I ever have enough room in my home, or space in my garden.

1.   Lavender

Lavender

Lavender is such a beautiful herb. I would love to learn how to grow and harvest it, because it can be used in so many different things, like in scents or in food. Lavender is a versatile herb that is very useful. Not only that, but it’s also a hardy plant. As someone who’s always busy doing so many different things, I’m not always there to look after and water my plants. So, having the more robust and resilient plants in my repertoire is perfect for me.

2.    Tomatoes

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are abundant plants, and we all use it in all sorts of cooking formats, whether it’s making a sauce for pasta, or including them in salads, or using them as part of a main dish. Tomatoes are an everyday essential, when cooking, so it’s no wonder why so many gardeners recommend growing them. Now, I know it’s one thing to say you want to grow your own tomatoes, but it’s quite another to actually do it, and I hope, eventually, I can be confident enough to grow tomatoes in my garden.

3.   Onions

Onions

One of the staple ingredients in my mom’s cooking, and in mine, is onion. There was one time when we actually had some onions sprouting in our kitchen, so my mom soaked them in water, to help it continue to grow, but we didn’t pot it in time, so all the roots rotted, and it never really took to the soil, when I finally did. So, I’d like to do it over and actually grow some onions. That way, we don’t have to keep buying them from the supermarket and spend so much money on them.

4.   Strawberries

Strawberries

One of my favourite fruits is strawberries, and while they’re easy to buy from supermarkets, they’re supposed to be easier to grow. So, of course, I’d want to try and grow them in my garden. Now, I know they can be a bit fussy, but they still are beginner friendly, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to look after. However, I do know that if they’re not potted correctly, they can rot. So, I’ll need to be careful when I do eventually start planting strawberries. If I don’t want them to die on me quickly, I’ll need to take good care of them, especially if I want them to come back more bountiful next year.

5.   Lettuce

Lettuce

One of the main leafy greens my family always needs is lettuce, so, like with all the previous plants I’ve mentioned, I would want to try and grow it. I know there are many varieties of lettuce out there, and it all depends on what ones I want to grow, but I’m sure, with time and experience, I’ll know which ones will work best for my garden. And like with all the previous plants I've listed here, I won’t have to buy them from the supermarket, and my parents will have food to cook.

6.   Roses

Rose

Roses are by far one of the most difficult plants to grow, at least for a beginner like me, because they can be very picky about where they root and how. Most of the roses my mom once bought and grew have, in one way or another, died because of the soil in our garden. However, there are still one or two that have toughed it out, and honestly, I’d like to see more of them. So, I hope one day, I have the experience enough to look after and grow more roses in my family’s garden.

7.   Peonies

Peonies

These are not beginner friendly plants, although they’re hardy. They require a lot of attention and effort, especially if you want plenty of flowers, when they bloom. However, these are one of the prettiest flowers I’ve ever seen, and I really would like to try and grow them in my garden. Of course, it would require me to actually take care of them, but I’m sure, once I’m more experienced, and once I have the time, I’ll be able to look after them well, and see them bloom every year.

8.   Pothos

Pothos

I know that Pothos plants are beginner friendly and are one of the plants that are usually seen in homes, both as fakes and as actual plants, but the reason I haven’t bought one yet is because I know they can grow to be very big. Like I said before, my house is small, so I can’t really afford a large plant like that, inside the home, but maybe one day, when I’ve cleared out a lot of the things I don’t use, I may just buy one, to see if I can maintain it, especially if I can get it to live in my bathroom, where I know it will thrive.

9.   Chamomile

Chamomile

One of my favourite teas is chamomile. I always have a cup at the end of the day, when I’m just about to sleep. It’s so soothing, and yet, I'm always buying a packet or a tin full of the dried stuff. I’d love to learn how to prepare my own teas with the beautiful flowers, without having to rely on store bought ones. Not only that, if I learn how to dry them, well enough, I can store them away for when the plant dies in winter. So, I can have chamomile tea all year round.

I Think It’s Time I Tried Raising Some New Plants

Ok, so I always talk about all the plants I want to raise, and while I don’t have the space for it, I’m still going to try. In fact, I’ll be heading off to my local garden centre now to see what other plants I can raise at home, and maybe learn to grow my own vegetable garden. Wish me luck!

Anyway, that’s it from me, as I said, I’ll be heading off to my local garden centre to buy more plants, and some extra resources to help them grow.
