Hello Everyone!
I’m back with another Sims build for you. It’s the build that was supposed to go up in May, but as we all know, a lot happened, and I couldn’t get it on my YouTube channel on time, but it’s here now. I did tell you I was going to be hitting you hard with all these videos for these two weeks. So, what did I build in May? Well, as you can see, we went with a cottagecore theme! That’s right, May was my absolute favourite architectural type. The quaint little country cottage. Check it out here, or visit my YouTube channel, and see all the other builds I’ve made, and other knick-knacks I’ve made.
Ok, so here’ I’ll be diving a little deeper into my thought process for this build, and what the inspiration for it was. So, strap on your boots, we’re farmin’ for info!
Why Cottagecore for May?
Isn’t it obvious? May is the height of spring, and what could be more evocative of that season than a quaint cottage with a garden, farm patch, and even a stable! If you’ve watched the latest episode for the My Bullet Journal Journey series, I would have told you that I associate each month with a different theme…I think I also tell you this in my Art Nouveau blog post as well. Anyway, because May is a spring month, and is colourful with all the spring flowers, like in the old adage “April showers, May flowers”, I could just see a cute little country cottage, with a garden full of flowers and plants. That’s why I made it a cottage.

Now, mind you, I wasn’t initially planning on a dark cottage like this. In fact, I was thinking about making it white, or bright stone, but I couldn’t help it, the dark stone variation of the Cottage Living stone wall worked perfectly with the Enchanted by Nature rock foundations, and I just ran with it. I was hoping to build something a little brighter and more cheerful, but then I got inspired by another Sims builder, who specialised in mainly wooden cottages, out in the boonies. For those who don’t know, the builder is called “SimlySash”.
Her builds are gorgeous! I love the tall tower looks, and if you noticed in my Enchanter’s Cottage build, I do something similar. However, all her builds seem to be more hag homes, and witches’ hideouts. I wasn’t trying to go for that look, although I was tempted to. What I wanted was something cosy that seemed like it belonged where I built it. Of course, being a cottage, it had to be placed in Henford-On-Bagley, so naturally, I tried to emulate that look, while being unique and full of vibrance and life. That’s why there are so many little details, you’ll see inside.
I Added A Stable!
So, most of my builds don’t have pets in mind, or even children, because a lot of the items that The Sims 4 offers, for them, aren’t exactly aesthetically part of the build, plus this home is far too small for a child to live in, or for having indoor pets…well, maybe you could put the pet bed and toys where the armchairs are, in the main room, but I didn’t have that thought in mind, when I built this house, but who knows, maybe later down the line I’ll make a pet-friendly or a child-friendly home again.

However, this time, I do have an addition that I never had before, and that’s a stable. I used to shy away from making anything horse related, because I never really played with the Horse Ranch expansion pack, so I was always hesitant to create something for horses, especially when I didn’t understand or know the dimensions of the doors and walls that the horses needed. Of course, now, having played with it a little, in my personal gameplay, I finally know what these horses need and how to cater to their gameplay that I finally created something for them. I’m so happy with it, because it really fits in with the theme as well.

Of course, if you don’t want to play with the horses, you can always rearrange the stable area and turn it into more farm animal friendly, and put a cow shed there, or a chicken coop, but (and please don’t blame me for it), I was actually also building this for my personal gameplay. You see, I’m on the second rotation of my sims’ world, meaning I’ve created the initial characters for my “forever save file”, and I’m expanding that repertoire, to include more characters, one of which will eventually live in this cottage, once she has the funds for it (it costs roughly §160 000). So, I was building this cottage, to fit her personality, because she’s a horse girl (honestly, I can’t wait to play with her, and include my mods, it’s going to be so cosy!).
Why Is It Call The Old Wine Cottage?
Ok, so you know how I said I have stories for each of the houses I build, like with the Dark Scandinavian, I imagine modern entrepreneurs who’ve decided to live in luxury, even if the house is small, or with the Art Deco house, and their aristocratic, or mercantile families? I imagine that this house once belonged to a wealthy merchant, centuries ago, but the family moved away, and only the remnant of his bloodline is maintaining the cottage and the old wine business, or in the case of the Sims 4, the Nectar business.

I also imagine that instead of moving with the rest of the family, and living in luxury, in the big cities and towns, whoever decided to live here, in the Old Wine Cottage, decided to live a self-sustaining lifestyle, planting in the farm patch for the wine (or the nectar) business that they run in the nearby town. Nothing too fancy, just a small wine shop that even sells jams, preserves and probably a handmade bouquet of flowers, or two. Essentially, they live a good life, homesteading and being part of the community.

It’s an ideal life that even I’m getting jealous of (literally, I want that life), and I can just see it being perfect for a slower gameplay, or a gameplay that inspires country and simple living. Honestly, I cannot wait to start playing with this house and seeing what I use and what I change as I go along, because I know there will be some changes, to include some of the mods I’ve downloaded.
Now To My Favourite Part, My Favourite Room
Unlike with the Art Nouveau house, I don’t really have a favourite room in this build, but I will say, I love the balconies at the back of the build. What I mean is not only the balcony on the second floor, but the overhang patio as well. I never really tried making something like it before, and if I had, it would have usually included a more solid foundation, because I wasn’t sure it was going to work, but I love it here! You may even see it in an upcoming build, who knows.

Of course, it’s not just the overhang that I love, I also love the climbing ivy and vines on that side too. I would have included them at the front as well, but then there would have been no space for the Sim to walk, or even get to the entrance of the house, if I added plants to those areas. So, my reasoning for having the overgrowth in the back, and not at the front is that the people who live in this house can maintain the front, since it’s easier to get to, but because the back looks over a cliffside, it’s more difficult to maintain, plus they planted all these flowers around the house, so it’s even more difficult to clear the back area. Maybe, when I make a cottage next time, I’ll leave some space in the front, to really make the build look cosier, with the overgrowth, for now, I’m happy with how it looks.

Another thing I just want to point out is the little jungle area in the bathroom. I love the look of the bamboo and the wall plants, with the candles and the tiles. It’s a vibe I can get down with, although the bathroom will need a few more windows, to really help the plants grow in this room. I imagine it would be a headache to lug them back and forth, whenever they need watering or sunshine. Regardless, I love how “in nature” the bath feels…and bonus, it’s a hint to what’s coming next!
Final Thoughts?
I love making cottages. I would love to make them all the time…maybe one year I’ll make it a theme and play with different layouts and looks for it…ooh, that’s probably not a bad idea. I’ll play around with it more, and I’ll let you know where I land with that, but anyway, I’m going off on a tangent. While this house isn’t as full of character or pizzazz as the Art Deco house, or the Art Nouveau one, I like it. It’s comfy, it’s cozy, and it’s perfect for those kinds of players who love the cottagecore lifestyle (I’m definitely one of those).
In the end, this house was made intentionally, like with most of my builds, and I really hope you like it too. Let me know in the comments!
