My Top 5 Favourite Build Types In The Sims 4

This post is a little different from the normal Build The Dream post, because I don’t have a video to attach here. This one is an opinion post, because I don’t want to just fill this section with videos. After all, you can find them on my YouTube channel, which I highly recommend you check out.

Anyway, today’s post, as you can see, is a list of all my favourite build types in The Sims 4. Now, bear in mind, these build types are based on real builds, but with my own spin to them. So, you might get a medieval fort that has an office with a computer there, or an Art Nouveau manor with some gothic interiors. Essentially, the vibe is the same, but the build might not be true to the actual architecture type, in real life. So, let’s get to it. Here are my top 5 favourite build types in The Sims 4.

1.   Cottagecore

My absolute favourite type of build, not just in The Sims 4, but also in real life, is the quaint countryside cottage. I’m talking about the brick buildings with thatched roofs, and immaculate front and back gardens. If you’ve been on the other sections of my blog, particularly the Plant Something New section, then you’ll know that I’m planning to, one day, learn how to homestead, so of course the cottagecore type houses will be my favourite build type.

I cannot stress just how comforting and cosy these types of houses are. They’re just so beautiful, with their stone and wood fixings; it’s like living in a fairytale. I can just imagine myself walking barefoot, in a dress and apron, my hair tied back with a bandana, and a basket of freshly harvested fruit and vegetables in my hand. Now, I know the cottagecore style has been done multiple times, over multiple build videos and accounts, but you can never go wrong with them, because there’s just so much you can make and do, in a cottage. Not to mention, if you’re a hoarder (like me – not just in game, but also in real life), you’ll always find some space for the things you collect.

2.   Art Nouveau

I only recently discovered how much I love the Art Nouveau style. It’s so whimsical and magical, I understand why they included this style in the Realm Of Magic game pack. There was a social media post I saw a while back, but there’s a good description of Art Nouveau designs: Art Nouveau is akin to Elven designs, while Art Deco is akin to Dwarvish designs. Does that make sense? With Elven designs, you get the curving, intricate details, while with the Dwarvish designs, you get the geometric lines and repetitive motifs, like in Art Deco. I think you all know what I mean now.

Essentially the Art Nouveau style is gorgeous because of how intricate and detailed its designs are, with the curlicue of vines, wisps of wind, and other connotations of the 4 elements (earth, water, fire, air), and the inclusion of colour and light in its makeup. The only problem is that it is difficult to actually make. While in The Sims 4, it’s simply a lack of content; in real life, it’s the process of making Art Nouveau architecture. Not to mention, the maintenance of the design can be very costly too. After all, you’re going to have to clean every nook and cranny that comes with sculpted mouldings and embossing. There are so many corners you’ll need to clean, it’s unrealistic. Of course, that doesn’t stop me from loving the style.

3.   Hacienda/Mediterranean

Whenever the weather turns hotter, I cannot praise the Mediterranean architects enough. From Spain to Italy and Greece, the architecture in their countries is just absolutely gorgeous. Yes, it might mean you live in cave-like spaces for the most part, and yes, their façades might look a bit plain from the outset, but these architecture styles do not shy away from colour, and I do love colourful things (have you seen my bullet journal videos?).  Of all my previous builds, the Hacienda and/or the Mediterranean builds are one of my favourites.

Not only is it practical, to help keep heat out, but it’s also just so striking against a desert, or even in a green field. The moment my eyes see a hacienda home, I immediately feel a little cooler (for some odd reason – blame psychology for that), and I just imagine that those who live in haciendas live a very passionate and energetic lifestyle. Honestly, these houses just make me want to take a siesta or sit by a pool drinking a nice cold smoothie.

4.   Fantasy/Medieval

If you’ve seen my Enchanter’s Cottage video, you’ll know what I mean. It’s essentially an adjacent build style to the cottagecore style, but instead of the welcoming gardens, you get the stone pathways and pavements around it. You get the Tudor style facades and the barrels of whatever ingredients the people in the house need. You can also get the wizard’s towers, with their long winding staircases and pointed roofs that speak of mysteries and spells.

Of course, that’s all thanks to my love for all things fantasy and magic. From Dungeons and Dragons to Hogwarts Legacy, I love the fantasy genre, and more often than not, they are set in a medieval town or city. This is, in part, thanks to the basis of folklore and mythology. Before the industrial revolution, people relied on old wives tales of magic, witches, wizards and all things fantasy. So, the genre is mostly based in those times, because no one had any other explanation for unusual circumstances than “it’s magical”. I still love this style, no matter what, and if I ever get to build one in real life, I’d be living the dream.

5.   British Country Estate

Ok, this one is mostly influenced by the environment I live in. As you all know, I live in the UK, and every now and then, when I’m driving around (whether it’s for work, going out, or doing something with the family), I’m always inspired by the old British architecture. Now, it’s not all Victorian architecture here, there are hints of the Medieval style and other eras of British history, but because of that, some of the estates here, in the UK, are a mishmash of all eras. If it’s not a purely stone build, then there’s some brick in it. If it’s not made with the stucco and obvious Tudor style, then there’s the gothic roof.

Honestly, the British Country Estate styles make me feel like I’m part of an old aristocratic family, and I should sit up with my back straight, my hair in a neat bun, and my hands in gloves (I’m not actually British – I was born here, but my family is from The Philippines). Now, fair enough, I haven’t made a British Country Estate, in my videos (yet), but I have built one for my personal gameplay, and I am planning to, one day, make a video of it, but there are a few things that need to change, before it's video worthy, plus I would need to plan for the right time to upload that. For now, just know I have made one, and I will eventually show it to you.

What’s yours? Do you like modern? Do you like classic? Let me know! Personally, I love classical builds, because they have more character. Architectural styles like Bauhaus, and modern city designs just don’t appeal to me as much as they used to. Yes, they’re interesting to look at, and the giant windows afford good views of your surroundings, but for the everyday person, it really isn’t about the views, it’s about functionality, and I’m willing to bet that, especially in real life, those types of houses are not at all functional. They are pretty to look at, and while they may offer the basic amenities, they don’t offer much else, but that’s my opinion. What’s yours?
