Hello Everyone!

You know the drill; it’s time to take a look at my bullet journal setup for the month. This year, I went with an orange and black theme. I know I did a similar theme, back in 2023, although it was a lot lighter and subtler than this one. This year, I decided to go all out with the Halloween theme. I mean the skulls, the potions, the deadly plants and even the witchy and ghost themes. I thought it was about time to embrace the spooky part of the spooky season. Now, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out the video below, then read on.

The Reason For The Season

As you all know, I associate each month with a theme already, like Jungle June, or 80s July, or Coffee September. For October, I think pumpkin, the harvest, the autumn of nature. I don’t usually associate October for Halloween, even though it’s my favourite celebration, besides Christmas. Now, I don’t love Halloween for the scaring part, you know Fright Night, scary movies, that sort of thing. I actually associate it with the ancient tradition of Samhain. Essentially, for me it’s the time where fairies and goblins are more likely to show up outside your home and try to trick you. It’s not supposed to be scary at all, but if you aren’t careful and you fall for their tricks, you might end up in a space that is scary.

Month Overview

Of course, this is all superstition, and things like that don’t actually happen. However, because I focus more on the fairytale and folklore part of Halloween, I always try to watch movies around this time that have these kinds of storylines, like The Neverending Story (1984), Princess Bride (1987), Stardust (2007), and Labyrinth (1986). If you know me, then you’ll know I love the Labyrinth movie, the one starring David Bowie & Jennifer Connelly. It’s what got me into the ideas of fairytale and folklore. Don’t get me wrong, it scarred me, when I was a child, but it’s also a good movie, at least in my opinion. So, that’s why I decided to go all out, this year, and do a Halloween theme for my bullet journal.

Let Your Inner Witch Out

So, with my interest in fairytale and folklore, naturally they’ll drift to witchcraft, and I love the aesthetic. It’s very close to the cottagecore aesthetic I aspire to bring into my home. That’s why I went with the theme this month. Now, don’t get me wrong, the use of runes and symbols in the journal won’t be used, but images of potion bottles, deadly and poisonous plants, or fantasy mushrooms will be. Why? Well, like I said, I love the theme, so naturally, I’d gravitate towards it, but it’s not the only reason I went with it.

The Hobby Hub

For the past few months, my Instagram feed has been inundated with sticker packs, washi tape stores and other stationery videos that I couldn’t help myself. I clicked on one of the adverts and went to a website that sold sticker and journal packs that looked rather beautiful. The name of the website is Soto Studios. They’re a stationery store based in Wyoming, USA, and I was drawn to their sticker packs, because they did bundles of different stickers, ones that I know I would use in my journal. So, I decided, against my better judgement, to buy a pack from them, to see what the quality of their products are like.

Soto Studios – The Judgement

When I got the pack, I was astounded by the thoughtfulness of the packaging. It came in a decorative pencil case which I will definitely use for my arts and crafts supplies (you see it briefly in my video). It is such a cute design I am surprised that detail went into the packaging. I was fully expecting to receive a small envelope or box with the stickers inside. Speaking of the stickers, I didn’t think I’d be getting paper alongside the stickers, and yet, when I opened the pencil case, lo and behold there were printed papers inside. While I didn’t use these papers in the journal, you can bet I’ll be using them in my junk journal or even a scrapbook, although I don’t think I’ll be ripping them up any time soon, they’re just too gorgeous!

Week 1

Week 2

Now, I will say, as I was shuffling through the stickers I’d bought, to see which ones I’d used, I did find a few that kind of seemed suspicious to me. With the constant Generated AI adverts I’ve seen here and there, on social media, I did spot a few stickers that were reminiscent of AI images. Now, I did reach out, and the owners of the company did say they outsourced their sticker images, so they aren't sure which of their stickers are AI made, but I dounderstand why they’d use it in their stickers. It does make it easier to make, and cheaper, and while I might vouch for a world without Generative AI, I understand why they'd use it, after all I’ve felt the pull of using it as well. So, if you do see any Generated AI images in my journal, it’s going to be pretty unavoidable. I’ve already bought a few more sticker packs from Soto Studios, for Christmas, and unfortunately, I think some of those packs include Generative AI images.

Back To The Journal

Let’s get back to the topic at hand. For this month’s journal layout, I chose to essentially copy the September one, where I use connected boxes and simple headers, for the titles to separate them. I even did this with the monthly overview page, where the boxes are situated on the left-hand side of the page split. As I mentioned in the September video, I made the mistake of not being consistent with the headers, using the stamps to create the titles of the boxes, for the monthly overview, instead of using the same header style of the main body of the setup. This time, I kept it consistent and I did use the same style for the monthly overview. So, I learned from my mistake.

Week 3

Week 4

Not only that, but if you’ve noticed the positioning of the daily task boxes, for the weekly setups, I changed them, while still honouring the page split (i.e. where half a page is decorated with stickers, and some tracker boxes, while the other half is dedicated to the daily task boxes), particularly for weeks 2 and 3. I didn’t want to be repetitive, like I was in September. I wanted to give myself a little bit of variety, otherwise I’d be falling back into the habit I had, in the first season of this series. So, that's why the layout is still not quite as repetitive as September's.

What Do We Think?

Honestly, it’s probably going to be another favourite of mine, for a while. The stamped edges really make the page stand out, without being thick, like with the patterned paper and card I used for June, July & August, and the contrast of the orange against the background really stands out. It is very reminiscent of the harvest season and Halloween. However, I think next year, I’ll be going a different route with the colour schemes, even though I would love to use the orange again, because the stickers I have from Soto Studios, as well as the washi tape I got from The Washi Tape Shop, are going to be sitting in my sticker bag for a while now, since Halloween only comes around once a year. Of course, I may use some of the stickers for winter, or maybe even spring, since some of the themes in this pack could also, potentially be used for these seasons, but we’ll see. It depends on the themes I go for.
